10th anniversary of HOTEL KRASICKI

10th anniversary of HOTEL KRASICKI

21.05.2021
On May 21, 2011, the official opening of the Krasicki Hotel**** took place. After only 16 months of construction work, preceded by archaeological and design work, which had been ongoing since 2009. From our perspective, 10 years is a beautiful Jubilee, but considering the age of Przedzamcze, it is just a drop in history. In an exceptional city, watched over by a specific genius loci, we have created a place that not only serves as a hotel and restaurant, but also as a culture-forming place, supporting art. And now a bit of history… On the eastern side of Lidzbark Warmiński, among the wooded moraine hills, stands one of the most valuable monuments of the Middle Ages, built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries - the Castle of the Bishops of Warmia. Situated in a truly defensive place, on a narrow strip of land in the fork of two rivers, where the Symsarna flows into the Łyna. Surrounded by a moat, on the other bank of which there were castle wards with a mill, sawmill and copper forge, administrative and residential parts - it delights with its magnificence. The body of the castle with a powerful octagonal tower and corner turrets, Gothic cloisters of the courtyard, vaulted and mostly colorfully polychromed interiors, caused it to be called the "Wawel of the North". The bishops of Warmia resided there for almost four hundred and fifty years - from 1350 to 1795. It was their main seat and the center of power. Here, laws were made and courts were held. Here, outstanding Poles and distinguished guests resided. Bishop Watzenrode and Nicolaus Copernicus open the list of distinguished figures, among whom are: the humanist, poet and first Polish professional diplomat Jan Dantyszek, the enlightened friend of Copernicus Tiedeman Giese, the leading leader of the European Counter-Reformation Stanisław Hozjusz, and the great historian and writer Marcin Kromer. The residence of the Bishops of Warmia was not only the seat of scholars. Ambitious politicians and statesmen appeared here, often combining their public activity with further enrichment of the Lidzbark cultural center. Among them: King Leszczyński, Sigismund III Vasa, John Sigismund Hohenzollern, Emperor Paul I Romanov, Charles XII, and Napoleon Bonaparte himself. The last Polish bishop of Warmia before the partitions was the famous poet, prose writer and comedy writer Ignacy Krasicki. Currently, the Castle houses the Warmian Museum, a branch of the Olsztyn Museum of Warmia and Mazury. Situated in the heart of Lidzbark Warmiński, a city that has been called the Pearl of Warmia for centuries. Fabulously situated at the fork of the Łyna and Symsarna rivers, Hotel Krasicki**** is the historic castle ward of the residence of the Bishops of Warmia - the most valuable, visible evidence of the history of Warmia and Mazury. ADAPTATION OF THE CASTLE Yesterday From the old defensive system that surrounded the castle and the outer bailey from the Łyna River, a fragment of the defensive wall is visible, rebuilt in the late twenties of our century. Of the old towers, the semi-cylindrical, later Gate Tower, probably from the 15th century, has been preserved at the entrance to the outer bailey. This tower is connected by the defensive wall with another, more impressive cylindrical Tower from the mid-15th century, modernized at the beginning of the 16th century, located in the south-eastern corner of the outer bailey. It was adapted for defense with artillery weapons. The outer bailey and the castle are surrounded from the south and east by a moat fed by water from the Symsarna River located higher up. The form of the three-winged layout of the outer bailey, open from the castle side, dates back to the mid-18th century. The most impressive is the eastern wing built by Bishop Adam Stanisław Grabowski (1741-1766) for the purpose of a court and the seat of the mayor. The central part of the palace is accentuated by a shallow projection topped with a triangular pediment with a bas-relief of the founder's coat of arms and the Order of the White Eagle. The roofs and part of the interior of the palace and the towers burned down in a fire on January 15, 1994. The buildings received new roofs in 1995. The castle is connected to the ward by a bridge renovated in 1929 (pillars) and in 1972-73 (remaining elements). In the past, the bridge on the last span before the castle was a drawbridge. Today In 2008, an investor appeared (Centrum Konferencyjno – Wypoczynkowe „ZAMEK” Sp. z o.o.), who, as a result of a tender, became the owner of the castle complex in Lidzbark Warmiński. The aim of the new owners of the facility was to transform it into a modern hotel and conference complex meeting the highest standards for this type of facility. The awareness that we were dealing with one of the most valuable historical facilities in the Warmia and Mazury region influenced the way the task was carried out. Determination in striving to preserve existing and recreate destroyed historical relics, combined with the need to meet the high requirements set for four-star and higher hotel facilities, led to the creation of technical documentation fulfilling both of these functions. The technical documentation prepared by a team of architects and archaeologists (GK Dżus Architekci; Arch-Tech) was approved by
